Success for Farnborough Members in Local Competitions

Four local clubs compete each year for 3 trophies - they are Aldershot & Farnham, Forty Three Club (Ash Vale), Yateley and Farnborough. This year a member of Aldershot & Farnham won the Spectrum Trophy for slides, but on 23 February the other 2 trophies were won by members of Farnborough CC.

Farnborough Wins the Surrey Advertiser Rosebowl Challenge Competition

Run by Woking PS, this annual slide competition is open to all the clubs in the Surrey Photographic Association, plus a few clubs by invitation. 19 clubs entered in 2006, and as usual the trophy was keenly contested. David Cary, Farnborough's Competition Secretary (Slides) selected 5 slides by 5 different members which scored a winning total of 42 points including a Highly Commended award for Peter Watson LRPS BPE1*.

Success for Farnborough's Members in the SPA Exhibition

The SPA (Surrey Photographic Association) holds a Biennial Exhibition with members of all its clubs invited to submit prints and slides. The standard of the photography in the Exhibition ranks with the best in the country. This time over 1500 images were entered by 228 photographers representing 34 different clubs, and the selectors, three highly qualified photographers, whittled these down to the best 238 prints and 205 slides.

Farnborough was delighted to learn that 7 of its members had 13 images selected, with Peter Watson LRPS BPE1* being awarded an SPA Ribbon for the Best Sport/Action print and Terry Redman awarded a Highly Commended Certificate for a Nature Print. The other photographers with acceptances were David Cary, John Childs, Coralyn Pascall ARPS, Derek Riley LRPS and Vivien Smith. This was an excellent result for the Club, and the accepted images can be seen on the 2006 Competition Winners Gallery.

At the awards ceremony, well known photographer, Roger Reynolds, who had also acted as a selector, presented the certificates.

FCC Wins the Albany Cup

Organised by Guildford PS, 8 clubs (7 this year) compete for the Albany Cup by submitting a themed panel of 4 prints by 3 or 4 different photographers. The judge, George Walsh APAGB, was asked to mark each print out of 10 and the themed panel out of 40.

Dave Filler, our Competition Secretary - Prints, entered a panel of 4 bird photographs which received a total of 36 individual points and the top mark of 40 for the panel as a whole. This excellent score gained Farnborough its first win in this competition, with Guildford a close second. The prints included 2 by Dave and others by David Cary and John Childs, all of which can be seen in the 2006 Competition Winners Gallery.

FCC at The Meadows

The Club holds regular displays at The Meadows shopping complex (we are sited between Marks & Spencer and Tesco) with a view to bringing the Club and its members' photos to the attention of the general public, and hopefully attracting a few new members. This was our final display of the 2005/6 season organised by new Exhibition Secretary, Martin Taylor.

Trophy for Dave Filler at the SPA Finals Night

Dave Filler has had much success over the last few years with his image of "Owl in Flight". Following 3 trophies in Club competitions in the 2004/5 season, it won the Spectrum Trophy in 2005 and also the Exhibition Cup in the Club's 2005 Library Exhibition when the public voted for their favourite print. This season the slide of this image represented the Club in the Surrey Photographic Association (SPA) Inter-Club competitions and as the highest scoring slide was entered into the Best Slide Competition on Finals Night. It duly took first place, a well-deserved achievement.

Margaret Salisbury FRPS, EFIAP, APAGB from Prestatyn, North Wales, a highly regarded national judge, presents the trophy to Dave who was delighted with this honour.

Club Awards Evening

The final meeting on 11 May was the awards ceremony when members who had received awards in Club competitions were presented with their trophies and certificates by Ron Fowler, the Club's Vice President and Jim Gaines, President. This photo shows the trophy winners with the Club's trophies.

Club Display at Local School

On 13th July, Guillemont Junior School in Farnborough held their first Art Exhibition. The exhibition was arranged by Ellie Childs, a teacher at the school, who has the additional responsibility of being the school as Art Co-ordinator. She is also a keen photographer.

The Club was invited to provide a display in the exhibition, along with a number of local artists and the Fleet Art Society. The exhibition was well attended by pupils and parents, and our display which was organised by Martin Taylor, Exhibition Secretary, was an enormous hit with the pupils. Martin reported that he really enjoyed the enthusiasm of the youngsters and their positive reaction to the photos. We have already been asked to participate again next year.

2nd ANNUAL EXHIBITION HELDIN FARNBOROUGH LIBRARY

The Mayor of Rushmoor, Clr John Marsh, opened the Club's 2006 Exhibition held in Farnborough Library. He was accompanied at the opening ceremony on Saturday 23 September by his wife, Margaret, the Mayoress.

Jim Gaines, the Club's President, started the proceedings by thanking the Library Manager, Sally Martin, for allowing the Club to use the Library premises for the week-long exhibition, and hoped that the Club might be able to repeat the exercise for many years to come. He also expressed appreciation for the hard work of Martin Taylor who as Exhibition Secretary had organised the Exhibition.

The Exhibition ran from 23 September to 30 September and was very popular with members of the public who were asked to vote for their favourite print from the 60 or so prints in the display. Over 200 votes were cast and the winning print was “Frogs Spawning” by Dave Filler. Dave wins the Exhibition Cup, a new cup that was donated last year by Gavin Roberts, the previous Exhibition Secretary, and his partner Elsie Hall. Dave also won in last year's event.

Members Celebrate Golden Anniversary

On 20 October, Club members Bob and Evelyn Miller celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Bob has been a member for 20 years and Evelyn almost as long. Both have participated in the running of the Club taking various roles and were both Committee members, with Bob being our previous Chairman. Evelyn is our current Refreshments Organiser, but she was given the evening off when she was presented with some flowers, and members enjoyed a piece of cake with their tea to mark their achievement.

FCC Raises Funds for African Charity

The speaker at Club on 2 November was Paul Goldstein, a well-known award-winning wildlife and travel photographer who showed us some excellent images including wildlife in Africa. This seemed very appropriate as the Club had decided to donate the proceeds from the evening's raffle to a charity run by the Hampshire Scouting Group which finances the construction of wells and springs to provide clean water for the people in the Masindi district of Uganda. The raffle was very well supported by members and visitors, while Paul also contributed money from the sale of his books on the evening, and a cheque for £130 was presented to Ian and Phil, two local Scout leaders who attended the evening.

Club Secretary Honoured

Clifford Derricutt was enrolled onto the Southern Photographic Federation's Roll of Honour in November. The Roll of Honour exists to recognise exceptional service to the Federation and/or Club over a period of 10 years or more. Clifford has been our Club Secretary for 17 years, has represented the Club at Federation meetings over this time and performed various other responsibilities for the Club. Recommended by Club members, the award was wholeheartedly approved by the SPF Council. He is the third Club member to be enrolled - Jim Gaines (President) and Ron Fowler (Vice President) were both enrolled in September 2005.

Christmas Meal Celebrations

On December 8th, Club members enjoyed a Christmas meal at the Lismoyne Hotel in Fleet. Some wine, a "Sweeties" quiz, a package from Santa and flying paper airplanes all helped to make for a light-hearted evening.
