Presentation – DXO Software
On 26th March the club had a Zoom presentation with a DXO Software expert, Michael Plant. Whilst it was recognised that this was pretty much a sales pitch by DXO, it did raise some interesting possibilities about how DXO software could be used either as a stand-alone package, or as part of an existing workflow.
Many of the members use Adobe software (Lightroom and Photo Shop), and Michael demonstrated how DXO PureRAW could provide an alternative mechanism for controlling noise and sharpness with camera/lens optical corrections when used as a preprocessor for Lightroom (or indeed the free Affinity software).
Another interesting addition for Adobe users might be the Nik Collection. This is a set of software packages which work on TIFFs or Jpegs rather than RAW images. The packages cover colour and black and white processing, sharpening, noise reduction and several other features.
For users looking for a RAW processing package, Michel demonstrated DXO PhotoLab. This is an editing package in its own right, with all the features of PureRaw and additional local editing capabilities.
As stated, it was understood that this was an opportunity for DXO to present its products. However, it was also an opportunity for members to get a taste of what else is happening in the photographic software industry and see practical examples of photos being edited with the different tools. Several members did say they used some DXO products, mainly PureRAW and Nik Software (although I do use PhotoLab myself).
