Special Interest Group – Street Photography
FCC has a number of photographers interested in different aspects of street photography, and there is a Special Interest Group (SIG) dedicated to the theme.
The definition of ‘Street’ can encompass a wide variety of styles, and different club members may follow different avenues.
Traditional street photography is associated with candid photos of people going about their everyday life. However, the FCC group takes a more relaxed view so that ‘street’ includes any aspect of the street including candid, urban art, events, street performance, urban landscape, architecture – indeed, just about anything shot on the street. The intention is to cover a wide spectrum of photography and not limit the SIG members to a narrow, strict definition.
The group members run regular self-organised trips to capture new images and have regular on-line sessions to discuss topics and critique images taken by the members. There are projects that members may choose to contribute to which have different themes over the season.
Street photography lends itself to using whatever equipment is at hand – the spontaneity of a grabbed shot with a mobile phone will often make a more interesting picture than one with a state of the art camera – the key is recognising the shot and using whatever means of recording it that you have with you.
The SIG is open to any member of the club. Active participation is encouraged, although not mandatory. There is no club subsidy for the group so attending any events, whether formally organised by the group or just a day out informally organised by a few members, must be paid for yourself.
