Guest Speaker – Cherry Larcombe EFIAP

On 16th May we had a Zoom talk from Cherry Larcombe on Abstract Photography.

This was a very interesting talk with numerous examples of the genre. Methods of creating abstract images were discussed and demonstrated. She discussed the production of abstract images in-camera using multiple exposure or intentional camera movement techniques, unusual angles and perspectives. She then went into detail of her method of using post-processing software to turn images into abstracts. In particular she detailed a method she uses utilising layers, blending and rotation to produce an abstract that has no similarity to the ‘base’ image. Cherry seemed to enjoy putting her abstracts into a triptych of three images.

It was a very interesting talk. As Cherry (as a judge herself) says, there is a bit of a vicious circle where club members don’t enter abstracts because they believe they are not marked as highly as other genres, and judges may not mark abstracts highly simply because they do not see many of them so do not really understand how to mark them.
