Lockdown competition – Round 2 and Photoshop layer mask demo

Continuing from the previous weeks successful lockdown challenge. Thursday 23rd April we held our second challenge with the theme of ‘Red’.
We met again via webex to look over the entries and vote for our favourites. We had a fantastic selection of entries to look over and choosing our favourite images was very difficult.

We had 23 entries from members. Members voted online via the website for their first, second and third placed panels and then the scores were added up.

The following images were placed in the competition

First: Poppy Field by Linda Kent
Second: Red Dahlia with Bumble Bee by Vivien Smith
Third: Poppy by Kathryn Graham
We had 3 highly commended panels by:
Chris Bean: Red Pavement
Paul Whitbread: Red Books
John Sturgeon: Hibiscus

Well done everyone.

Following this, Kathryn Graham provided a short demo of some photoshop tips that she used in creating her recent ‘Jurassic Nightmare’ image from the creative competition. In particular the use of layer masks in removing parts of images you do not want to see in your final image.

Next week, Thursday 30th April, we are hosting our first lockdown speaker EJ Lazenby who will be talking on ‘Working with Textures’. During the first half Jane will be answering all the what and how questions. She will go through sourcing and creating textures , how to use blend modes and then 3 different methods of how to apply textures to an image. The second half of the talk she will edit a series of images live, which have been provided by club members beforehand.
