Guest Lecture – Rojer Weightman

On 13th March we had a talk from guest lecturer Rojer Weightman. This was titled “Still life, Allegory, Vanita and Memento Mori” which covered the influence of the Dutch Masters on his still life photography. Rojer taught Art and Photography, and his talk showed how these subjects cross over in the realm of the “Still Life” genre. The title refers to different categories of art, and throughout the talk Rojer demonstrated with both images of paintings from the Dutch Masters, and also with his own photographic creations within the genre.

The first half of the talk concentrates on the history of the genre as art, with a particular emphasis on the Dutch Masters, and explained the meaning behind many of the objects in the paintings. After the interval Rojer explained how he replicated the style of art within his photographs, how he set the shots up and the lighting he would use, illustrated with many of his images.

This was an interesting talk which presented a view of a genre that is under-represented in club competitions.
