Guest speaker – Dr. Edward Hyde FRPS
Submission by Alan Brown
On 10 Apr 25 Eddie Hyde gave us a highly informative and very interesting talk Motion Capture: A comprehensive exploration of the creative use of shutter speed. A way of bringing more dynamism to your images.
He began with motor sports, the use of panning to blur the background but keep the subject sharp, then went on to explain how this effect could be achieved in post production too, if necessary. He also covered using high shutter speeds to freeze action but use other devices in the frame – dust behind the cars, aeroplane vapour trails, steam and smoke from steam engines pulling a train – to show movement.
The MACH loop, airshows, giant storm waves at Newhaven, waterfalls, ICM and people in the street all featured in his talk, and all shot at varying shutter speeds to show us the effects that can be achieved.
Overall, one of our best talks this season.
