Guest Speaker – Alistair How

On 29th January Farnborough hosted a Zoom meeting featuring a talk by Alistair How Bsc(Hons), MBA,LRPS AFIAP, BPE 1, A.APS, T.IAAP entitled “Creating a Panel or Triptych”.

This was another talk which gave the members cause for thought, especially in the context of one of the set categories for the upcoming club PDI competition being “Triptych”. The talk was a mixture of guidance, advice, opinion and worked examples.

One of the first pieces of advice was… it is not easy. Luckily, most of the other advice was more practical and tangible concerning layout, framing, and sizing. Much was made of the ‘flow’ of an image, whether it was three related images (colour, subject), a set of images that told a story or even a single image broken down into three sections. One of the main messages was that the sum of the individual images should be greater than the images on their own.

Alistair showed a considerable number of panels and triptychs, featuring both his own work and those of other photographers whose work he admires.

Towards the end of the talk Alistair gave a worked example of the thought process he went through when constructing a panel based on images taken at an ice hockey game. From his initial panel layout, he gave an indication of why he altered the layout, why he changed some images from the original selection, and how he attempted to get a balance of subject, action and size.

This was an interesting (and topical) presentation, from a confident speaker.
