Colour Walk Using a 13 Year Old Phone
Submission from Chris Bean
On the third Thursday of each month Spitalfields Market comes alive with colour as creative people who love colour and dressing up in a show of style and wearable art meet up and show off their finery. It’s a great place to practice your street portraiture skills as everyone there loves showing off their style. I have been on several occasions with my ‘big’ camera but I decided this time to challenge myself by using only a 2012 model iPhone 5. This model has a single fixed 4.13mm f/2.4 lens which gives the equivalent view and depth of field of a 33mm lens at about f/19 on a full-frame camera and a tiny sensor.
Once I got used to the time it took to focus and the significant shutter lag, I enjoyed the hour or so I spent there with it. Compared to my iPhone 15PM the images are not as sharp (image stabilisation wasn’t a feature 13 years ago), the dynamic range is poor and with only 8 megapixels to play with I doubt they’re worth printing larger than a postcard. A few of the pictures I took are below and I think It just goes to show that you don’t always need to have up to the minute kit to enjoy a bit of street photography.
